The Old Synagogue (Alte Shul) in Bielsk Podlaski was also known as Icele's bet midrash, which was its founder. The small synagogue, most likely wooden, possibly the oldest one in the city, was located near the main synagogue on Orla Street. The entrance to it was located below ground level. Stairs led to the main prayer room. According to the accounts, it contained a magnificent Aron Kodesh – the intricate sculptural decorations featured images of instruments used in the Temple in Jerusalem. This synagogue was attended mainly by poor craftsmen. The synagogue was destroyed during the Holocaust.
