On Thursday evening, on the second day of the month of Tammuz, the yahrzeit of Tzadik Szlomo Halberstam of Bobowa will begin.

Born in 1847, Szlomo Halberstam was the  son of Meir Natan, and the grandson of tzadiks Halberstam of Nowy Sącz and Elizer Horowitz of Dzików. After his father's premature death, he was raised at the courts of his grandparents.

"Szlomo Halberstam was the favourite grandson of Rebbe Chaim of Sącz," said Duvid Singer, a Bobowa Hasid of New York. "The Sącz rebbe tasked him with preparing his works on Jewish law, questions and responses, published under the title of Diwrej Chaim. Szlomo Halberstam was selected to review them and deliver them for print."

Szlomo Halberstam lived in Bukowsko, Oświęcim, and Wiśnicz, where he founded a yeshiva. A number of future Hasidic leaders studied at the facility, including Becalel Jeszaja Bornstein and Eliezer Dawid Grunwald. He was much respected already at that time. In 1889, he was received by Emperor Franz Joseph.

In 1891, Szlomo Halberstam moved to Bobowa (today, Małopolskie Province). He died in Germany, during treatment in 1905. He was buried at  a cemetery in Bobowa.

The Hasidic dynasty founded by Szlomo Halberstam has become one of the most eminent ones and is continued until today. Since 2005, it has been led by Rebbe Ben Cyjon Arie Lejbisz Halberstam, while Bobowa  Hasidim live in such cities as New York, Montreal, Toronto, Antwerp, London, and Jerusalem.
