The Jewish Historical Institute, together with its partners, invites you to the July 22 March of Remembrance to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto liquidation action. Together we will pay homage to the 300,000 murdered Warsaw Jews, whose life and death were captured by Władysław Szlengel in his poetry.

On July 22, 1942, the Germans began deporting the residents of the Warsaw ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp. For more than two months, every day around five to seven thousand people – Jews from Warsaw and neighboring towns – were transported in the wagons from the Umschlagplatz to Treblinka. Everyone was murdered. About forty thousand people remained in the ghetto, among them Władysław Szlengel, a poet of the Jewish fate who – in his works – reflected the feelings of the community diminishing from day to day.

On July 22, 2019, we invite you to the March of Remembrance, which will commemorate those victims. Those who are remembered thanks to their works, and those nameless, after whom only ashes remain.

We will meet at 18:00 in front of the Umschlagplatz monument and together embark on a symbolic route "from death to life". Via Stawki, Karmelicka, Nowolipki, Jana Pawła II, Elektoralna and Chłodna street, we will reach Waliców, where Władysław Szlengel lived before the war. We will listen to his works in new musical arrangements. As in previous years we will carry the Ribbons of Memory with the names of murdered Warsaw Jews.
